This web site allows you to browse or search the full text of AAP policy statements, such as Breastfeeding and the Use of Human Milk. You can also access Current AAP Clinical Practice Guidelines, Model Bills and Press Releases.  There is information on upcoming seminars and information on community pediatrics programs and opportunities for members to increase involvement in community health and chapter initiatives.  Excellent resource for setting up standards of care in hospitals and clinics. Policy Statement Information can also be found on circumcision, hyperbilirubinemia, pain
control for infants, and other pediatric conditions and concerns.

The mission of ACNM is to promote the health and well-being of women and infants within their families and communities through the development and support of the profession of midwifery as practiced by certified nurse-midwives, and certified midwives. The web site provides information regarding conferences, courses available for becoming a midwife, standards of practice, mission and bylaws and how to find a midwife in your area. Information regarding the benefits and promotion of breastfeeding are found here as well as the organization's practice statement, “ACNM Clinical Practice Statement on Breastfeeding” (1992).   You will find the organization's mailing address, phone number and e-mail address on this site.

American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists

This is the official web site for American Physicians of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  There is an area for public access to information; some areas can only be accessed by members. Here you will find policy and position statements, press releases, recommendations, links to publications and clinical updates. Legislative news and the group's recommendations to congress are linked on this site.  Using the search engine within the site you can find information on various aspects of women's health care including prenatal, intrapartum and postpartum care.  The mailing address, phone numbers and e-mail address are also available.  The organization's position statement on the promotion and support of breastfeeding is found in a press release,  "ACOG NEWS RELEASE July 1, 2000 ACOG ISSUES GUIDELINES ON BREASTFEEDING.”

The American Dietetic Association promotes optimal nutrition and well being for all people by advocating for its members.  This site provides a catalog of publications for consumers and professionals, nutrition fact sheets and recommendations.  You will also find a listing of upcoming meetings and events of the organization, how to find a dietitian, press releases and the breastfeeding position statement of the ADA: Promotion of breast-feeding -- Position of ADA Am Diet Assoc. 1997, 97:662-666. This is the official web site of Baby-Friendly in the United States. The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is an international program of The World Health Organization (WHO) and The United Nations Childrens Fund (UNICEF). Based on the WHO/UNICEF Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, the Initiative recognizes hospitals and birth centers that have taken steps to provide an optimal environment for the promotion, protection and support of breastfeeding.  On this site you will find the listing of the hospitals in the United States that have been certified, a list of the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, the phone number, mailing address and e-mail address to contact them, and a section on frequently asked questions. 

International Lactation Consultant Association

The International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) promotes the professional development, advancement, and recognition of lactation consultants worldwide for the benefit of breastfeeding women, infants and children. This is the web site for International Board Certified Lactation Consultants worldwide.  It gives information regarding the code of ethics, position statements, where course are offered to prepare for the board certification examination, upcoming conferences and links to other sites of interest.  There is a guide for selecting an appropriate lactation management course as well. La Leche League International

La Leche League International's mission is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information and education, and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and the mother. This is an extensive site with information on upcoming conferences and events, articles for the breastfeeding mother as well as professionals, press releases and a product catalog of books for sale by the organization. By entering a topic into the search engine within this site, you will be able to obtain valuable information for counseling and educating mothers and staff members on the management of breastfeeding and treatment of problems.  There is information here regarding breastfeeding issues from infants to toddlers, breastfeeding multiples and special needs infants. Many of the articles are offered in other languages as well.  You will also find a listing of La Leche League leaders within your geographical area, the organization's mailing address, phone number and e-mail address. 


The San Diego County Breastfeeding Coalition

The San Diego County Breastfeeding Coalition is a non-profit association whose mission is to promote and support breastfeeding through education and outreach in the community.   The web site provides many helpful articles about the promotion and support of breastfeeding as well as how to manage some common issues.  They have information for employers on providing a breastfeeding friendly workplace and applying for a breastfeeding friendly workplace award.  You can also find their mission and vision statements, information about publications, a resource guide in both English and Spanish, membership information, and upcoming educational opportunities. The coalition's mailing address and e-mail address are also found here. There is a full-page of links to other very useful breastfeeding sites as well.

Wellstart International

This organization has a focus on the global promotion of breastfeeding. They support the 10 steps for successful breastfeeding as outlined by the World Health Organization and UNICEF. The goal of Wellstart International is to contribute to global health and wellness during pregnancy and infancy (until weaning is completed and a mother is biologically and psychologically ready to begin another pregnancy if she so desires) through the promotion, protection, and support of optimal infant and maternal health and nutrition.  On this web site you will find information regarding the organization's vision, mission, goal and objectives, how to order publications that provide instruction on the promotion and management of breastfeeding and how to contact them.
